Just a Little About Your Photographer

My name is Ashley McKelvey and I reside in Hampton, VA originally from Girard, PA. Moving to Virginia in 2008 was quite a change for me considering Girard is a very small town! I moved to VA with my husband, Alex, who serves in the United States Navy. We married on June 18th, 2008 and had our wedding August 2nd, 2008; a couple days before we moved to VA to start our life together.

About 6 months later on February 26th, 2009 I gave birth to our son, Caleb Thomas. Our true pride and joy. I would give anything for him and he is my number one fan, as I am his. He's definitely a mommy's boy! ;) When Caleb was 4 months old he was diagnosed with Septo Optic Dysplasia. We knew from that point on that we would have to work extra hard to make sure Caleb always had everything he needed to live a normal, happy life. And so far we have done a pretty darn good job! <3

So where does photography come in? Well, ever since I can remember (around middle/high school) I was constantly snapping pictures. I was always the one out of the group that never forgot her camera! I had even been made fun of a few times because of how many photos I would take. Just friendly teasing, of course. I had gotten the nickname "camera happy" or "picture happy". As I got older the camera still stayed with me but I was one of those people that didn't think to optimistically about myself. I didn't think I would ever be able to make a career out of it or even be able to afford an entry level camera.

When I first moved to VA I had other jobs, I even went to school for a little while for Waxing & Nail Technician until Caleb was diagnosed. I dropped out to take care of what was most important, my family. At the time I was bummed out about having to quit but I soon realized it's not what I wanted. I spent a couple years at home just being Mom and wife. We also went through a 6 month deployment.

A little over a year ago, before my husband deployed I had started talking to him about how I would like to start pursuing photography. That it had been something I always loved to do and I needed to start doing some things for me again. I had taken some fall photos of Caleb with my point and shoot and did some light editing and just loved how they came out. That was the spark that started it all. I think at that point was when I realized that I really wanted to take it further. My husband returned in December of 2011 and to my surprise he had a very exciting Christmas present for me that he had bought while over seas in Paris. My entry level Canon 1000D   ^_^   I was so happy! I couldn't wait to start learning how to use it and it wasn't long before I wanted to capture everything!

A year later and I have learned so much and I have met so many wonderful people because of deciding to pursue my passion. I still have such a long way to go and I really am still just getting started. I am hoping the year 2013 will bring some great things for my photography. We just bought our first house, I have my own spare room for a studio and I am planning to get my license at the beginning of the year. I have a long way to go but I will get there! I feel so blessed to be able to follow my dreams and have so much support from my family and friends.
